On August 1, the Grammy-winning artist unveiled the music video for her emotional ballad, “The Subway.”
Chappell Roan fans may need to be patient when it comes to hearing new material from the singer.
In an interview with Vogue published on Monday, August 4, the Grammy-winning artist opened up about the release of her recent music video for the emotional track “The Subway” and shared insight into her creative process.
Roan, 27, revealed that although listeners are eager for a follow-up to her 2023 debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, along with her recent singles “The Giver” and “The Subway,” a new album isn’t on the horizon just yet.
“There’s no album,” she admitted. “There’s not even a group of songs.”
She explained that crafting her first record took five years, and she anticipates a similar timeline for her next one. “It’ll probably take at least five years to write the next,” Roan said. “I’m not someone who can just crank songs out quickly.”
The “Pink Pony Club” performer emphasized that forcing creativity doesn’t work for her. “Whenever I try to push myself, the music just isn’t as good,” she said.
Roan also acknowledged that some fans are impatient for new work. “I see comments like, ‘She’s everywhere but the studio.’ Even if I spent 12 hours a day in the studio, that wouldn’t mean an album would come out any faster,” she explained.
As for her approach to social media during the writing process, Roan made it clear she prefers to work privately. “I’ve never created an album while staying off platforms like Instagram,” she said. “This time, the process is just for me—no one on TikTok is going to witness it.”
Speaking about “The Subway,” Roan—whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz—said it took a frustratingly long time to get the track exactly how she wanted it.
“I was really struggling to move on from someone,” she shared with Vogue. “I kept telling myself I was over it, but the feelings lingered even when the relationship ended.”
In a PEOPLE interview from September 2023, Roan reflected on her debut album’s creation and its impact. “People like to celebrate, and I think my music feels like a party,” she said.
“I believe people want to be joyful, to sing, dance, dress up, and feel free. This project gives them a space to express themselves without fear of judgment and to explore who they are—just as making it helped me discover who I am.”
