“Espresso” became Spotify’s most-streamed song of 2024, amassing over 1.6 billion streams.
Sabrina Carpenter didn’t anticipate Espresso would make such a splash.
In a December 30 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Please Please Please singer opened up about her initial doubts that anyone would connect with the track, which went on to become Spotify’s most-streamed song of 2024, with over 1.6 billion streams.
The 25-year-old, who collaborated with Dunkin’ Donuts on her Sabrina’s Brown Sugar Shakin’ Espresso drink, described the song’s success as “kismet,” acknowledging how perfectly it all came together.
When Sabrina Carpenter released Espresso in April, she was uncertain whether it would “connect” due to its timing. “I remember deciding to release it at the start of summer and thinking espresso, coffee is more of a fall drink,” she shared.
“I wasn’t sure if it would resonate, but the song’s sentiment, its sound, and the confidence it carries were things I truly believed in.”
She admitted, “I had no idea if anyone would like it, but I liked it, and that was what mattered to me in that moment, something I try to remind myself of often.”
Espresso is featured on Carpenter’s highly praised album Short n’ Sweet, which earned the pop star six Grammy nominations for 2025, including Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for the song.
In the interview, Carpenter reflected on how “addictive” Espresso turned out to be.
“I think that’s the whole point of it. It’s kind of addictive. It’s all just kismet the way it all came together,” she mused. “I didn’t write it with that in mind, so I’m really happy to hear that. But thank you for listening so many times, even if you didn’t realize it.”
Back in August, she told The Guardian that she wrote Espresso as a “manifestation tactic” because “no one liked me romantically at that point — no one was obsessed with me.”
“I didn’t have anyone I was even talking to,” Carpenter shared, adding that she’s “always been a bit delusional, in that sense.”
Carpenter completed the North American leg of her Short n’ Sweet tour in November and will head to Europe in March for a series of concerts throughout the spring.
She also recently released her Netflix holiday special, A Nonsense Christmas, which featured plenty of music and celebrity cameos, including appearances from Shania Twain and Chappell Roan.
