Olivia Rodrigo and Dan Nigro are celebrating their recent success as the 2024 Songwriters of the Year, honored by ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). The talented duo, who have been collaborating on songwriting for several years, received this prestigious recognition at ASCAP’s annual awards ceremony held on Wednesday, May 8, at the Houdini Estate in Los Angeles.
Olivia Rodrigo and Daniel Nigro’s winning songs for which they were named Songwriters of the Year were “Vampire” and “Bad Idea, Right?”
ASCAP highlighted their collaborative success, describing them as a “true pop dream team.” Following the global success of Olivia Rodrigo’s album SOUR, they continued to impress with their sophomore record GUTS in 2023, which received critical acclaim, sparked mainstream fascination, led to a sold-out world tour, and produced chart-topping hits.
Daniel Nigro expressed his gratitude for the honor on social media, thanking ASCAP for naming them Songwriters of the Year in an Instagram post on Thursday, May 9.
“And thank you to @chappellroan for presenting me the award, and reminding the world about my Pizza Hut days… feeling very grateful today,” Daniel Nigro continued in his Instagram post. He shared a photo of himself and Olivia Rodrigo together at the 2023 Grammys, along with another image holding his trophy.
The artist Chappell Roan also won ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year award in 2022. Additionally, she was named Time’s 2021 Entertainer of the Year.
In a coveted profile, both Olivia Rodrigo and Daniel Nigro spoke to the magazine about their songwriting abilities and the criticism that accompanied their success.
In a December 2021 interview with Time, Olivia Rodrigo discussed how some of her songs had to be revised to add songwriting credits after fans noted similarities to other artists’ work. “It was really frustrating to see people discredit and deny my creativity,” she expressed.
Daniel Nigro also weighed in on the topic, mentioning how backlash often accompanies success. “It seems like people get funny about things when songs become really popular,” he remarked.
Rodrigo emphasized her discomfort with comparisons to other industry figures, indicating she preferred to be recognized for her unique contributions.
“Young women are constantly compared to each other,” Olivia Rodrigo shared. “I’m labeled as the ‘new this’ or ‘this woman meets that woman,’ and that can be reductive. I’m just Olivia. I’m doing my own thing. It’s meaningful when people recognize that,” the “Drivers License” singer emphasized.
Regarding her songwriting, she stated, “Songwriting is the thing I take most seriously in my life. It’s the most personally gratifying, too. At the core of it, all my songs are about me and my experiences and my feelings. It’s an important lesson in controlling your own narrative, too.”
