Lady Gaga Hopes to Be Remembered as a ‘Real Artist’: ‘For Others, It Might Be the Meat Dress’

The pop star also shared why she finds it difficult to define the sound of Mayhem during an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.

Lady Gaga has a clear vision of how she wants to be remembered.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the 38-year-old pop icon reflected on her legacy, expressing her desire to be recognized as a “real artist” rather than just for her more extravagant moments.

“Something I want my fans to know now—why I said I love being Lady Gaga—is that I recently reconnected with my artistry in a big way while making this album,” she told the 51-year-old radio host. “I poured so much of myself as a musician, producer, and songwriter into every part of it.”

She added, “That’s who Lady Gaga is to me. Maybe for someone else, it’s the meat dress or something else they associate with me. But for me, I always want to be remembered as a real artist—someone deeply devoted to a life of art.”

During the conversation, Gaga explained why she finds it difficult to categorize the sound of her upcoming album, Mayhem.

“ARTPOP was a vibe. Joanne had a distinct sound. Chromatica had its own sonic identity. The Fame Monster was more chaotic, while The Fame was theatrical pop. Born This Way, to me, had more of a metal-electro New York feel,” she shared. “With Mayhem, I intentionally avoided putting my music into a specific box or ‘outfit.’”

Instead, she embraced a broad range of influences.

“That approach allowed me to reconnect with how I first discovered my songwriting and production abilities as a kid, which made the process really special,” she said. “Still, some of those influences—like electro grunge—naturally made their way onto certain tracks, some of which lean industrial.”

Gaga described Mayhem’s Garden of Eden as inspired by early 2000s music.

“There’s a song called Can’t Stop the High—which is only available on the version of the album sold on my website—that’s a pure electro grunge track, even heavier than Perfect Celebrity,” she added, referencing another song from the album.

In January, Gaga announced Mayhem as her seventh studio album. The 14-track project will also feature previously released songs Disease and Die With a Smile, the latter featuring Bruno Mars.
