Katy Perry faced a fashion crisis during Monday night’s episode of American Idol! The 39-year-old panelist experienced an embarrassing moment when her top broke while judging a contestant.
The wardrobe malfunction occurred just before Top 14 hopeful Roman Collins performed “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown, causing Perry’s silver sculptural crop top by Kate Barton to appear loose at the back.
In a behind-the-scenes video shared by Perry on Instagram after the show on Monday, April 15th, the singer was shown being attended to by a group of crew members as they attempted to fix her top while she remained seated at the judging panel.
“My top broke #idol,” Perry explained in the caption of the post.
“The singer of ‘Daisies’ expressed the need for her top to remain secure in the video, followed by a glance at the camera indicating concern. Humorously, she remarked that the show might receive more than it bargained for if her top wasn’t fixed. Luke Bryan, a fellow judge on the show, intervened to assist. With a pair of small scissors in hand, the 47-year-old country singer declared his readiness to fix the situation. However, he quickly reconsidered, announcing a change of plans. The scene transitioned with a voiceover indicating the passage of time.”
Following her wardrobe malfunction, Perry appeared in a clip from the Monday night episode of Idol. She was depicted standing at the judging panel, with her arms wrapped around her chest. Addressing contestant Collins, she humorously attributed her wardrobe malfunction to his song choice, stating, “That song, uh, broke my top off!” Adding a playful remark, she quipped, “I guess it is a woman’s world.” Bryan joined in the banter, jokingly commenting on the potential boost in ratings. Meanwhile, Perry knelt behind the panel table to maintain her modesty, joking, “It’s a family show!”
In the final shot, the singer was depicted back in her seat, using a pillow to cover her chest and maintain her modesty.
After the show, Perry shared her perspective with Access Hollywood, downplaying the incident: “I wouldn’t call it a malfunction, I’ll just call it an interesting moment on live television.” She reflected on past experiences, noting, “It seems like every season, I’m either tearing the seam of my pants or … I’m just super expressive physically!” Despite the mishap, Perry expressed her fondness for the outfit, stating, “I just love this outfit so much and I knew I was rolling the dice but I was like, who cares?”
