Ed Sheeran Reveals Some Artists Lip-Sync—They Just Won’t Say It Out Loud
Ed Sheeran isn’t shy about calling out a common but rarely acknowledged habit in the music industry.
While appearing in a recent Beta Squad YouTube video, the 34-year-old “Sapphire” singer was challenged to pick out which of six contestants was a real vocalist. During the game, a participant mentioned she’d consider lip-syncing if her voice wasn’t in top condition. That prompted Sheeran to comment, “I don’t think a true professional would openly admit to miming.”
When one of the Beta Squad hosts asked if lip-syncing was common among established performers, Sheeran nodded, but added, “Yeah, but they won’t admit it.”
As for his own approach to live shows, Sheeran said lip-syncing just isn’t feasible for him. “It wouldn’t work—I’m up there with just my loop pedal and guitar,” he explained. “There’s no hiding behind anything.”
Despite vocal strain, Sheeran said he would never cancel a show over voice issues. “Even if I’m slightly hoarse, I’ll still go on. I’ll push through,” he said.
He elaborated further, saying, “Some professionals do mime during performances. But they’d never say so publicly.”
Sheeran is currently in the middle of his +−=÷× Tour, which kicked off in 2022 and is now moving through Europe. His next stop is scheduled for August 7 at Middenvijver Park in Antwerp, Belgium.
His eighth studio album, Play, is due for release on September 12. The upcoming record includes the singles “Azizam,” “Old Phone,” “Sapphire,” and “A Little More,” the latter of which is set to drop August 7.
