Charli xcx Opens Up About Taking a Step Back From the Internet and Prioritizing Her Mental Health
Despite becoming one of the defining artists of the digital pop era, Charli xcx says she has been intentionally spending less time on social media.
The singer, whose “Brat” era became a major cultural moment, shared that she has been distancing herself from online platforms while dealing with anxiety, personal mental health challenges, and the intense attention that followed her career’s biggest breakthrough.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone published Thursday, June 18, Charli explained that reducing her online presence has helped her feel better mentally.
Her decision comes as she prepares for a new chapter with her upcoming album Music, Fashion, Film, which has already generated conversations online following the release of the lead single “Rock Music.” The song’s experimental sound and provocative message sparked reactions from fans, with many questioning whether Charli was introducing a new artistic direction or intentionally challenging expectations.
Although she remains one of pop music’s most discussed and internet-driven figures, Charli said she has become more careful about how much online commentary she consumes.
She admitted that the constant discussions surrounding her work can sometimes become overwhelming.
For much of her career, Charli embraced internet culture, maintaining a close connection with fans and becoming a major influence in online pop communities. However, the success of Brat, released in June 2024, brought a level of attention she had never experienced before. The album achieved major commercial success, received multiple awards including three Grammys, and transformed its signature bright green style into a worldwide trend.
Behind the confident image associated with the Brat era, Charli revealed that she was privately facing serious emotional struggles. The artist, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, said that her mental health had reached one of the most difficult points of her life.
She explained that the combination of public scrutiny, nonstop conversations about her career, touring responsibilities, and the demands of fame eventually became overwhelming.
Charli shared that her anxiety began affecting her physically, making it necessary for her to change how she managed her personal and professional life.
Since then, the singer has made adjustments to create more balance. In addition to limiting her time online, she has reduced her caffeine intake, changed her approach to work, and placed greater importance on spending quality time with her husband, George Daniel.
