“Those are skills you just don’t have at 16,” Cabello said, reflecting on her rise to fame alongside Normani, Dinah Jane, Ally Brooke, and Lauren Jauregui in Fifth Harmony.
Camila Cabello recently reflected on her time in Fifth Harmony in a cover story interview with Nylon. The I Luv It singer opened up about her experience in the group alongside Normani, Dinah Jane, Ally Brooke, and Lauren Jauregui, from their formation in 2012 to her departure in December 2016.
Looking back, Cabello expressed a sense of grace but questioned whether she struggled more than a typical teenager under the pressures of fame. “It’s hard to know what’s normal, famous or not,” she shared. “My sense of balance wasn’t functional—it was more than anyone should have to handle in that situation.”
Now 27, Cabello emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, especially within a group dynamic. “Conflict resolution is crucial,” she explained. “These aren’t skills you have at 16.”
“How do you handle feeling left out? How do you manage jealousy?” Cabello continued. “How do you navigate those emotions without causing harm to yourself or others?”
Fifth Harmony was created during the second season of The X Factor USA, with guidance from Simon Cowell. As a five-member group, they rose to fame with hits like “Worth It” (2015) and “Work From Home” (2016), and released successful albums including Reflection and 7/27.
On December 19, 2016, Fifth Harmony announced Camila Cabello’s departure in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter). “After 4 and a half years together, we were informed through her representatives that Camila has decided to leave the group. We wish her well,” the message read.
The remaining members confirmed their plans to continue as a quartet, stating, “We are four strong, committed women who will carry on with Fifth Harmony and pursue our solo projects. We’re excited about the future and look forward to what the new year will bring.” They went on to release a self-titled album in 2017.
In her own statement following her departure, Cabello expressed support for her former bandmates: “As sad as it is to see this chapter end this way, I will continue to cheer them on, both individually and as a group. I wish them all the success and happiness in the world.”
Since leaving Fifth Harmony, Cabello has released four solo albums: Camila (2018), Romance (2019), Familia (2022), and C,XOXO (2024), a tribute to her Miami roots.
In the Nylon interview, she also shared a recent encounter with Normani, 28, at Paris Fashion Week in September. “Every time I see her, I say something, and she laughs really hard,” Cabello said. “It doesn’t feel like we’re strangers. It feels like we’re getting back to when we were really close.”
