“Opalite” marks the second music video released from Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.
Taylor Swift is embracing a surreal new era — and leaving her signature blonde hair behind — in her latest music video.
On Friday, Feb. 6, the superstar debuted the visually striking clip for “Opalite” on Spotify and Apple Music. The release marks the second music video from her 2025 album, The Life of a Showgirl, and features a lineup of high-profile guest appearances.
To mark the premiere, Swift, 36, took to Instagram to explain how the unusual concept came together. The video opens as a mock advertisement for a fictional “Opalite” spray, which promises to instantly transform negativity into happiness.
From there, the storyline takes a whimsical turn. Swift forms an emotional attachment to a large gray rock she retrieves from a “best friend box,” bringing it along on outings and even crafting a bracelet labeled “FRIENDS4EVER” for it.
The plot expands when she encounters Domhnall Gleeson, whose character is dealing with his own comically painful bond — this time with a cactus. The two eventually spark a romance that culminates in a dance sequence, with both performers dressed in coordinating blue, sequined jumpsuits.
Later scenes show the rock and cactus displayed together in a shopping mall, now companions themselves, with the rock still sporting the friendship bracelet Swift made earlier in the video.
Reflecting on the project, Swift shared that her favorite part of the creative process is the initial burst of inspiration. She explained that the idea for the “Opalite” video struck unexpectedly while she was promoting The Life of a Showgirl.
At the time, she was appearing on The Graham Norton Show in October 2025 and found herself seated alongside a group of artists she deeply admired, including Cillian Murphy, Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Lewis Capaldi.
During the broadcast, Gleeson jokingly suggested he’d like to appear in one of her music videos — a comment Swift initially laughed off, but one that quickly sparked a fully formed idea. She later decided it would be fun to involve everyone from the episode in the project, comparing the collaboration to a group assignment, minus the obligation.
Gleeson ultimately landed one of the lead roles, while Lee appears as a singer on television. Turner-Smith takes charge of a televised aerobics class, and Capaldi pops up as a photographer. Graham Norton himself makes a cameo as a salesman pitching the fictional “Opalite” spray, while Murphy appears towering over the scene on a billboard advertising the product inside a mall.
The video’s final moments feature Eras Tour dancer Kameron Saunders, who appears as a judge scoring Swift and Gleeson’s dance routine.
Swift noted that she was thrilled by how enthusiastically everyone embraced the project, including its ’90s-inspired aesthetic. She also teased that fans might spot familiar faces from The Eras Tour and shared her excitement about reuniting with longtime collaborator Robert Stam.
According to Swift, the experience exceeded her expectations, allowing her to explore new creative metaphors, bold fashion choices, and unexpected friendships. The video was shot on film, adding to its nostalgic tone.
Earlier in the week, on Feb. 4, Swift announced the upcoming release on her website, unveiling a countdown clock ahead of Friday’s premiere. The site also revealed that “Opalite” will debut on YouTube on Sunday, Feb. 8.
The delayed YouTube release follows a December announcement that the platform would no longer provide streaming data for Billboard’s charts.
