Taylor Swift has stepped in to lend support to a young fan and her family during a difficult time.
On Friday, October 17, the 35-year-old pop superstar quietly contributed $100,000 via GoFundMe to the parents of 2-year-old Lilah, who was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer following a seizure when she was just 18 months old.
For months, Lilah’s mother, Katelynn Smoot, has shared her daughter’s journey on social media, using the “Stand with Lilah” pages to update followers and raise funds for her treatment. The family first launched their GoFundMe campaign in March.
Swift became aware of the story after Katelynn posted a TikTok video on October 8 showing little Lilah watching a video of the Life of a Showgirl singer on her iPad — calling Swift her “friend.”
“This might be my fault,” Katelynn joked in the caption, also including clips of herself pregnant with Lilah while attending Swift’s Eras Tour.
She added that Lilah’s name was almost Willow, inspired by one of Swift’s 2020 songs. “We were set on that name my whole pregnancy but ended up choosing Lilah,” she wrote. “I listened to Taylor throughout my pregnancy and somehow gave birth to a mini Swiftie. Lilah adores her music, and even through her cancer treatments, she finds happiness in it. I hope one day she gets to attend a Taylor concert — she would love that more than anything.”
According to the family’s GoFundMe page, Lilah’s cancer is extremely rare and aggressive, with only 58 documented cases in the United States last year. While she has already undergone surgery to remove a brain mass and recovered well, her treatment continues with three months of chemotherapy, followed by stem cell therapy and proton radiation. These next stages require extended hospital stays and frequent travel to a specialized children’s hospital several hours away.
Just over a week after the viral TikTok, Swift made her generous donation, writing alongside it:
“Sending the biggest hug to my friend, Lilah! Love, Taylor.”
The contribution not only covered the family’s original $100,000 goal but pushed them nearly $60,000 beyond it.
In an emotional update shared later that day, Katelynn expressed her gratitude, saying the gift would allow them to “focus on being here with our girl.”
“Is this real life?” she wrote in the caption of a video featuring herself and Lilah dancing to Swift’s new song The Fate of Ophelia. “Thank you so, so much @taylorswift. I’m still in shock. This means the world to us. Tyler and I can finally focus on our baby girl and being together as a family.”
