Selena Gomez is sharing insights into her latest musical role.
During a Q&A with the cast of Emilia Perez at the Telluride Film Festival on Sunday, September 1, the 32-year-old actress and singer revealed that singing in the film was “therapeutic.”
When asked about the process of learning her character Jessi Del Monte’s song, “Mi Camino,” Gomez explained, “It actually started as a completely different song.”
She elaborated, “It originally had a rougher sound, but as I worked closely with [singer-songwriter] Camille on it, the song transformed into almost a ballad. It turned into a story about a woman and the different phases of life she goes through, and it became something truly beautiful.”
“I watched it back, and I spent hours and hours in the studio. It was so much fun, but I also had to approach it differently from how I usually sing,” Gomez continued. “I had to think, ‘What are the limits I can reach within my character?'”
She added, “The experience was really therapeutic, and I thought it turned out beautifully.”
Gomez emphasized the significance of depicting her in her authentic self, wanting to showcase her true identity. These remarks from the artist of “Who Says” followed the release of the initial trailer for the Spanish-language French film by Netflix on August 26.
The film, which features Zoe Saldaña, is described as “a bold and imaginative experience that transcends genres and expectations.” It stars Karla Sofia Gascón as Emilia Pérez, a cartel leader who attempts to stage her own death. Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramírez also appear in the cast.
The synopsis highlights the film’s focus on four extraordinary women in Mexico, each on their own quest for happiness through expressive song, dance, and striking visuals. It follows Emilia Pérez, who recruits Rita (played by Saldaña), a disillusioned lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically.
Emilia Pérez will be available in select theaters starting November 1 and will stream on Netflix beginning November 13.
