Ruth B. Opens Up About Her First Album in Five Years and Carly Rae Jepsen’s Encouraging Feedback

“To create music that feels meaningful to me, I need to actually experience life and draw inspiration from what I go through,” the Canadian singer-songwriter tells PEOPLE.

Ruth B. never intended for five years to pass between her albums. However, the Canadian singer-songwriter needed time to navigate and make sense of major changes in her personal life before she could turn those experiences into music.

Ruth B. first gained attention in 2013 by sharing songs on Vine. Since then, she has established herself as an emotionally driven pop songwriter, releasing two EPs along with her albums Safe Haven in 2017 and Moments in Between in 2021.

Her music has produced several standout tracks, including “Lost Boy” and “Dandelions,” with the latter finding a new generation of listeners after gaining significant traction on TikTok.

Now, after spending several years away from the spotlight, Ruth B. has returned with her third studio album, Peace to Make. The project, which she co-produced with six-time Grammy winner Cole M.G.N., explores the emotional aftermath of a major breakup and the process of finding herself again.

Ruth B., 31, says the relationship had been a significant part of her life. She entered it when she was young and ultimately walked away from it at age 28. Those experiences became the foundation for much of the new record.

The album combines reflective pop songs with emotional ballads, chronicling both the end of the relationship and the singer’s journey toward rediscovering her identity. Looking back, Ruth B. says she is thankful for what the experience taught her, even though it was difficult at the time.

She also credits songwriting with helping her work through her emotions and mental health. Rather than deliberately stepping away from music, she says she simply needed to live through everything that was happening before she could fully understand how to express it creatively.

“For me to write good music, I genuinely have to live life and have experiences to write about,” Ruth B. explains. She says the break was not necessarily a planned decision; she simply had a lot happening in her life and needed to deal with it first. Once things became calmer, she began turning those experiences into songs as a way of processing everything.

At first, she wasn’t sure those early songs would eventually become an album. The first few tracks were primarily an outlet for her emotions and a way to work through what she had experienced.

After completing around three songs, however, Ruth B. began to realize that the material might have a larger purpose. That was when she started searching for the right producer to help shape the project.

Meeting Cole M.G.N., who ultimately produced the entire album, gave her the confidence to move forward. Once they began working together, Ruth B. realized she had the foundation for a complete record.

The result is Peace to Make, a deeply personal project that transforms heartbreak, self-reflection and personal growth into a collection of songs about rebuilding and moving forward.
