“The musician expressed to ‘The New York Times’ that collaborating on ‘Fortnight’ and ‘LEVII’S JEANS’ involved a lot of pressure.”
Post Malone is sharing insights about his collaborations with Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
In an interview with The New York Times on August 8, the 29-year-old musician discussed his experiences working with Swift and Beyoncé on their 2024 albums, The Tortured Poets Department and Cowboy Carter. He noted the extensive security measures required to manage the immense fame of these two superstars.
Malone recounted that while filming the music video for their hit single “Fortnight,” Swift had to conceal herself under “an umbrella and drapes” while riding in a golf cart on set, to prevent drones and a helicopter from capturing footage of her.
Beyoncé took even more stringent precautions to keep her collaboration with Malone a secret before announcing her country album in February. Malone described how he received their track “LEVII’S JEANS” through one of Beyoncé’s representatives sent directly to his personal estate in Utah to avoid any leaks.
“I can’t even imagine being at their level — it must be tough,” Malone told The New York Times. “That’s a lot of pressure.”
Despite the intense security, Malone said he’s “just honored to be in these people’s presence,” regardless of how confidential their work may be. For their collaboration, the two did not record together in the studio and have yet to meet in person. Malone revealed that they mainly communicated via text to keep their project under wraps, describing the process as “terrifying.”
Since the release of their collaborations earlier this year, Malone has praised both Swift and Beyoncé. After Beyoncé’s album came out on March 29, the 10-time Grammy nominee took to his Instagram Story to thank her, writing, “thank you [Beyoncé]. congrats this album is beautiful.”
When Swift released The Tortured Poets Department the following month, Malone expressed his gratitude on Instagram once more. He posted a Polaroid photo of the two of them with the caption, “It’s once in a lifetime that someone like @taylorswift comes into this world. I am floored by your heart and your mind, and I am beyond honored to have been asked to help you with your journey 🥹 I love you so much. Thank you Tay 💕.”
In his conversation with The New York Times, Malone reflected on his journey since his 2015 debut and the evolution of his career that has led to his upcoming country album, F-1 Trillion.
After years of hinting at his genre shift, Malone’s new LP, which includes collaborations with Dolly Parton, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, and others, is set to be released on Friday, August 16.
Malone’s guitarist, Derek Wells, confirmed to the publication that Malone’s move into country music is authentic: “He’s not playing dress-up here.”
Wells elaborated, “In this moment that the genre is having, many of us have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to country projects. I’ve seen [Malone] actively seek permission to be part of this genre. He’s doing everything right.”
