Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter shared a brief but meaningful moment at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
In a fan-captured video posted on X, the good 4 u singer and Espresso hitmaker were seen embracing during the ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, Feb. 2. The caption of the post read, “SABRINA AND OLIVIA HUGGED.”
Fans quickly reacted to the moment online. “Not even exaggerating when I say this is the greatest peace treaty in history,” one user joked. Another wrote, “A hug that says everything! So proud of both of them 🙌.”
A third fan added, “This just healed a generation, btw.”
Sabrina Carpenter, 25, and Olivia Rodrigo, 21, were rumored to be part of a love triangle with Joshua Bassett, dating back to their Disney Channel days.
Rodrigo and Bassett, 24, began dating in 2019 while starring in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. However, during their relationship, Bassett was seen spending time with Carpenter, and the two even wore matching Halloween costumes in 2020.
A few months later, in January 2021, Rodrigo released drivers license, sparking speculation among fans that Bassett had left her for Carpenter.
Listeners were quick to analyze the lyrics, particularly the mention of an older “blonde girl,” which many believed was a reference to Carpenter: “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about.”
In response to the drama, Bassett released Lie Lie Lie in January 2021, which fans speculated was a breakup song aimed at Rodrigo. Shortly after, Carpenter dropped Skin, a track that seemed to address the situation with the line “don’t drive yourself insane,” which many interpreted as a message to Rodrigo.
Rodrigo later revealed that drivers license was written during a deeply emotional moment. She shared that she had been “literally crying in my living room” when inspiration struck. “I was driving around my neighborhood, listening to really sad songs and crying in the car. When I got home, I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll write a song about this, crying in the car,'” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.
She went on to explain how the song came together organically. “So, I just sat down at my piano and plucked out some chords that I liked, and it kind of happened that way,” she said. “But it was really, really natural and organic. [It was] very much me writing in the depth of my emotion.”
Despite the fan theories, both Carpenter and Rodrigo have denied that their songs were about anyone specific.
At the 2025 Grammys, Olivia Rodrigo introduced Chappell Roan for her performance of Pink Pony Club.
Sabrina Carpenter had a standout night, winning both Best Pop Vocal Album for Short n’ Sweet and Best Pop Solo Performance for Espresso. She was nominated for a total of six Grammys at this year’s ceremony.
