The “Hot Girl Summer” hitmaker opened up about her admiration for the Queen of Christmas in a new cover-story interview with InStyle.
Could Megan Thee Stallion be on her way to becoming the Queen of Summer?
In a recent InStyle cover story, the rapper behind “Hot Girl Summer” revealed that she has taken inspiration from Mariah Carey’s longtime association with the Christmas season. Megan said she hopes to establish a similar tradition around summertime.
“I want to be the Mariah of Summer,” Megan said, adding, “I love Mariah Carey.”
She pointed to Carey’s unmistakable connection with the holiday season, explaining that Christmas essentially becomes synonymous with the singer once November arrives. Megan wants to create that same kind of annual anticipation when summer begins.
“Mariah is Christmas. As soon as November starts, we just hear Mariah hit that high note. Boom. That’s her s—,” Megan said. “Me, June 21st. As soon as summer starts, boom, it’s Megan.”
“I’m not playing,” she added.
Carey’s reputation as the Queen of Christmas was built over decades. In 1994, the five-time Grammy winner released Merry Christmas, the holiday album that introduced the world to “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The festive classic has since become the longest-running No. 1 single in U.S. chart history.
Carey expanded her holiday catalog in 2010 with Merry Christmas II You, which included “Oh, Santa.” The song later received a revamped version in 2020 featuring Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande.
Known as the Songbird Supreme, Carey has also made seasonal performances a major part of her career, staging Christmas shows around the globe almost every year since 2014. She is scheduled to return to Brazil for three holiday concerts this November.
Her Christmas empire extends beyond music, too. Carey has appeared in multiple holiday films and published a children’s book, The Christmas Princess (The Adventures of Little Mariah).
Megan’s connection to summer began taking shape in 2019, when she popularized the phrase “hot girl summer.” She later released a song bearing the same name that year. Featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, the track climbed to No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Now, Megan appears ready to turn the season itself into her signature celebration, just as Carey has done with Christmas.
