Kesha Drinks from Wendy’s Cup Following the Chain’s Playful Jab at Katy Perry’s Space-Themed Look

Perry faced criticism for collaborating with Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald on her recent album, given his widely publicized legal dispute with Kesha.

Katy Perry may have gone to space, but Kesha chose Wendy’s.

After the 40-year-old “Firework” singer participated in Blue Origin’s first all-female spaceflight on April 14, Wendy’s took to X with a tongue-in-cheek comment suggesting she be “sent back.” Not long after, 38-year-old Kesha posted a smiling photo of herself sipping from a Wendy’s cup.

The posts stirred conversation due to the history between the two pop stars. Perry’s recent collaboration with producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald on her latest album 143—their first joint release since Kesha filed a 2014 lawsuit accusing him of years of abuse—sparked backlash. Dr. Luke denied the allegations and filed a defamation countersuit; the case was ultimately settled in 2023.

Kesha and Perry were once friends and both worked extensively with Dr. Luke in the early stages of their careers. However, Perry notably distanced herself from the producer during his legal battle with Kesha, choosing not to collaborate with him on her albums Witness and Smile.

Speculation about Perry reconnecting with Dr. Luke began to swirl in mid-2024. Kesha appeared to subtly address the rumors by posting a simple “lol” on X in June. Then, in August, just a month after the Dr. Luke–produced lead single “Woman’s World” from Perry’s album 143 dropped, Kesha was seen wearing a t-shirt that read “LOL” during her set at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

While promoting 143 on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Perry opened up about working with Dr. Luke again, saying: “I get that it sparked a lot of conversation. He was one of several collaborators, but ultimately, the music and the choices come from me.”

After Wendy’s joked on social media about sending Perry “back to space” following her Blue Origin mission, Kesha seemingly responded by making an appearance at one of the chain’s locations, posting a photo of herself sipping from a Wendy’s cup.

Alongside Katy Perry, the recent Blue Origin mission featured a crew of notable women: journalist Gayle King, philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, astronaut and bioastronautics researcher Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn. The team launched from West Texas aboard the New Shepard rocket for a roughly 10-minute suborbital flight.

Despite its historic nature, the mission drew criticism from some celebrities, including Olivia Munn and Olivia Wilde. Responding to the backlash, King told PEOPLE that the detractors may not fully grasp the significance of the moment.

“We’ve been hearing from so many young women and girls about how inspiring this is,” she said.

Sánchez—who is engaged to Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos—also weighed in passionately. “It really fires me up,” she said. “I’d love for critics to visit Blue Origin and meet the thousands of employees who pour their passion and dedication into this project. This mission means everything to them.”

She added, “So when people make those kinds of comments, I just think, ‘Come with me. Let me show you what this is really about.’ It’s truly enlightening.”

During the brief journey, Perry lightened the mood by singing a few lines of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”—a moment King later described as the highlight of the flight.
