Kelly Clarkson Returns to TV Following the Passing of Ex-Husband Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson has made her return to television less than two weeks after the loss of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock.

The Grammy-winning singer, 43, appeared in the premiere episode of her NBC limited series Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson on Tuesday, Aug. 19 — just 12 days after Blackstock died from melanoma on Aug. 7 at the age of 48.

The episodes were filmed earlier this summer, before Blackstock’s passing. Upcoming editions of the show — which expands on a popular segment from The Kelly Clarkson Show — will welcome guests including Gloria Estefan, Teddy Swims, and Lizzo.

The debut episode featured the Jonas Brothers, who joined Clarkson to chat about their music, including the time they referenced her in their breakout 2006 hit “Year 3000.”

Earlier this month, PEOPLE confirmed that The Kelly Clarkson Show will return for its seventh season this fall.

Just a day before Blackstock’s death, Clarkson revealed that he had been battling illness and announced she was postponing her Las Vegas residency to prioritize their children — 11-year-old River and 9-year-old Remington.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year my children’s father has been ill,” Clarkson shared on Instagram. “I am deeply sorry to everyone who purchased tickets, and I’m so grateful for your patience, kindness, and understanding.”

Blackstock’s life was honored in a memorial service held Sunday, Aug. 17, according to his obituary.

“Kelly and Brandon had their ups and downs, but at the end of the day, he was the father of her children and she is devastated for their sake,” a source told PEOPLE. “Her kids mean everything to her, and she’s focusing on staying strong for them.”

Clarkson and Blackstock were married for seven years before separating in June 2020. At the time of his death, he was in a relationship with Brittney Jones, Clarkson’s former assistant, according to both his obituary and Jones’ LinkedIn profile.
