Katy Perry Claps Back at Critics Claiming She ‘Can’t Dance’ During Houston Performance: ‘Show Them This’

Perry launched the North American stretch of her Lifetimes Tour at Houston’s Toyota Center on May 7.

Katy Perry isn’t letting the critics get to her.

Amid recent chatter online questioning her dance skills during international performances, the pop icon kicked off the North American leg of her Lifetimes Tour with a bold, cheeky response. The launch took place at Houston’s Toyota Center on May 7, where Perry addressed the criticism head-on — with humor and confidence.

During a performance of her hit “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Perry paused during an instrumental break and, according to a fan-captured video shared on social media, declared: “Show them this when they say I can’t dance!” She then launched into a deliberately exaggerated dance routine — energetically swinging her arms and legs in a playful, over-the-top fashion. For an added splash of sass, she lifted her skirt and playfully flashed her backside to the crowd.

Perry’s Lifetimes Tour officially kicked off on April 23 with a performance at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. However, shortly after, the pop star’s choreography came under fire, with some critics labeling it as “embarrassing” and “cringe.”

Adding fuel to the fire, Perry also faced backlash for her participation in the historic Blue Origin space flight, with critics questioning the cost and the growing trend of privatizing space travel.

Despite the negativity, Perry remained calm and composed, addressing the online criticism directly last week via Instagram. In a heartfelt comment posted on April 29, she wrote: “When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.” This was in response to a fan-created billboard in Times Square, which offered an encouraging message in her support.

Perry expressed deep gratitude for her fans, emphasizing the strength of their bond and her commitment to staying true to herself. In her message, she wrote, “We’re in this beautiful and wild journey together. I can continue to remain true to myself, heart open and honest, especially because of our bond. I love you guys and have grown up together with you and am so excited to see you all over the world this year!”

She reassured her followers, adding, “Please know I am ok, I have done a lot of work around knowing who I am, what is real, and what is important to me. My therapist said something years ago that has been a game changer, ‘No one can make you believe something about yourself that you don’t already believe about yourself,’ and if I ever do have any feelings about it, then it’s an opportunity to investigate the feeling underneath it.”

Her message reflects a focus on self-awareness and growth, encouraging her fans to trust their own inner strength and resilience.

Perry went on to share a heartfelt sentiment, saying, “What’s real is seeing your faces every night, singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth. I find people to lock eyes and sing with, and I know we are healing each other in a small way when I get to do that.”

Reflecting on her personal journey, the Unconditionally singer also admitted, “I’m not perfect,” adding, “I’ve omitted that word from my vocabulary.”

Her openness about embracing imperfection and the healing power of connection with her fans further demonstrates her commitment to authenticity and growth.
