John Legend holds one song especially close to his heart.
While speaking with reporters in the press room at the 2025 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Feb. 2, the 46-year-old singer reflected on his favorite song to perform and its deep connection to his late grandmother.
“One of the songs I often sing at my shows was written by the great Simon & Garfunkel, and I dedicate it to my grandmother, whom we lost too soon… Bridge Over Troubled Water,” Legend shared.
Describing the track as “a great song to comfort people during difficult times,” the father of four expressed his appreciation for its lasting impact.
“The loss of my grandmother was deeply painful for my family, and it affected us for a long time,” he said. “Performing Bridge Over Troubled Water is my way of honoring her memory, and it truly brings me comfort.”
Originally released in January 1970, Bridge Over Troubled Water was the second single from Simon & Garfunkel’s fifth studio album of the same name.
The song earned five Grammy Awards in 1971, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and held the No. 1 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks.
John Legend has been performing his rendition of the iconic song for years and released his own version on an updated edition of his Legend album in 2023.
In 2024, Legend joined Jacob Collier on an a cappella version of the track, which also featured Tori Kelly’s vocals. The song went on to win in the Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella category at the 2025 Grammys.
“Hopefully our version will bring some comfort to folks, just like that song has brought comfort to me,” Legend shared in the press room at the annual music event.
