“I confided in him because I was struggling deeply at the time,” Lovato said in her new interview with Who What Wear.
Demi Lovato says her husband, Jutes, was a major source of strength during a difficult chapter in her life.
In her new Who What Wear cover story, the 33-year-old “Fast” singer reflected on meeting Jutes, 34, while creating her 2023 album Holy Fvck. She began working on the record not long after completing a rehab stay in 2021.
“Every project I’ve made has played a role in my life, though some were more emotionally charged than others,” Lovato shared. “Holy Fvck ended up being incredibly therapeutic — maybe the most healing album I’ve ever made.”
Lovato and Jutes (whose full name is Jordan Lutes) first connected in January 2022 to collaborate on music. The album marked a turn back toward the rock-influenced style of her early days, and the two teamed up on several tracks, including “Substance,” “Happy Ending,” and “City of Angels.”
“We built a friendship long before anything romantic happened,” she said. “I trusted him with what I was going through at the time, because I was in a really tough headspace while making that album.”
Lovato, who has long been open about her battles with mental health and addiction, added, “I had just finished treatment and was newly sober. I was feeling everything so intensely. I didn’t have anything to numb myself with.”
According to her, Jutes stepped in as a steady presence: “He supported me as a friend first and helped me through the deep depression I was stuck in.”
Their relationship began to shift while writing “Happy Ending,” which Lovato called “one of the most vulnerable songs I’ve ever created.”
“I had no idea we’d eventually fall in love — let alone get married,” she said. “But that songwriting session was when I realized I felt safe with him.”
Lovato, who married Jutes in May, also reflected on why some of her past relationships hadn’t worked out. She explained that she hadn’t fully healed or taken care of herself before.
“When you commit to doing the inner work, life has a way of meeting you halfway,” she said. “I finally reached a place where I was comfortable being on my own, and once I got there, I was able to let someone else in.”
The “Here All Night” artist added that she once felt pressured to hit certain milestones by a certain age. Instead, her relationship with Jutes unfolded naturally.
“I’m genuinely happy,” she said. “I told my husband today, ‘I’ve never loved you more. I didn’t know my love for you could keep growing like this.’ Everything happened exactly when it was supposed to.”
Earlier this month, Jutes told PEOPLE that he’s been experiencing his own transformation, especially with sobriety, leading up to their marriage.
“I feel like I’ve finally grown up,” he said. “I want a long, healthy life — especially now that I’ve married my soulmate. I want us to be here for a very long time. I used to not care about what happened to me down the road.”
