Carrie Underwood believes contestants on American Idol should always push through and finish their performances strong.
During the Monday, March 9 episode, contestant Chloe Lauren ran into trouble while performing. The singer briefly lost her place in the lyrics, but Underwood immediately encouraged her to keep going.
Lauren had chosen to perform Hello by Adele for the show’s “Ohana Round.” Although she began the song confidently, she struggled to stay on beat once she reached the chorus.
From the judges’ table, Underwood, 43, urged her to continue, telling the singer to keep moving forward as the audience also tried to lift her spirits. The country star could be heard repeatedly encouraging Lauren to push through the moment.
Lauren quickly regained her footing and managed to complete the performance, though she appeared shaken afterward.
Judge Lionel Richie, 76, reassured the contestant, telling her she was doing fine while offering support.
Once the crowd settled down, Underwood shared her thoughts on the performance and praised Lauren for recovering.
She reminded the contestant that she earned her place in the competition because of her voice, adding that small mistakes during a performance aren’t what truly matter. What counts most, Underwood said, is being able to move past those slip-ups and end the performance with confidence. She also commended Lauren for bouncing back quickly and finishing strong.
Speaking afterward in a confessional, Lauren admitted she felt she had briefly lost focus during the performance.
The previous week, Underwood drew some criticism from the audience after telling another contestant that performing without a backing band felt like a missed opportunity.
Anticipating the crowd’s reaction, she joked that she expected to hear boos and playfully said their reactions only fueled her.
As the audience continued to respond, fellow judge Luke Bryan stepped in to support her. He pointed out that Underwood knows what she’s talking about, referencing her own win on the show in 2005.
