Billie Eilish likens her constant use of social media to smoking cigarettes, admitting, “It’s genuinely a problem.”

“I go online to watch the videos I’m interested in, but I always end up getting pulled in,” the singer shared.

Billie Eilish is drawing parallels between social media use and another harmful habit.

In an interview with Complex published on Dec. 5, the “Birds of a Feather” singer opened up about her nuanced relationship with social platforms, explaining why she compares them to smoking.

Eilish, 22, revealed she’s “off that s–t” when it comes to X (formerly Twitter). “I also quit Instagram and TikTok a few months ago, and it’s been amazing,” she shared.

However, while touring, the singer admitted she misses connecting with fans. “I really enjoy engaging with fans while on the road,” she said. “Not being on social media makes it harder to see their videos and perspectives on the show. I love seeing how people feel and think about the performance, and if something looks off, I want to fix it,” she explained.

The singer explained, “I go online to watch the videos I want to see, but then I get sucked in,” noting that’s when the “problem” begins. “Then I get all f—ed up, and I’m stuck. So I’ve been back on it, but I’m trying to get off. It’s my cigarettes,” she admitted. “It’s really a problem.”

When asked about the positive aspects of social media, like hosting Q&A sessions with fans on Instagram, the “Bad Guy” singer shared that she does enjoy those moments — for the most part. “Some of it’s awesome, and I love it and cherish it. But again, people make it really hard. It’s sad to me. Some people ruin it for everyone.”

Eilish has been candid about her social media habits — or lack thereof — in the past. She previously discussed her mixed feelings about sharing personal details on these platforms during a conversation with British artist Stormzy for i-D in September 2021.

“I feel conflicted about it,” she shared at the time. “I don’t always want to reveal intimate details about my life; I don’t want people to know everything about me. But at the same time, I want others to feel seen and heard if they’ve gone through similar experiences.”

However, Eilish acknowledged that there are times when she doesn’t want to open up about her personal struggles. “It’s a tough responsibility because, in the end, it’s not my responsibility. I don’t owe anyone anything,” she said.
