I was born in Farmington, Minnesota, and grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa. I went to Northwestern University, and received a teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa. I taught high school and coached in Vinton, Iowa for nine years. I left teaching and went to graduate school at the University of California, San Diego, where I received my Ph.D. My first college faculty position was at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California from 1989 to 1995. I have taught at Eastern New Mexico University since 1995, and I was the chair of the History Department from 2000-2005.

I've written three books (two of them on the Civil War), and have co-edited four others. I am also the radio broadcaster for all Eastern New Mexico University football, basketball, and baseball games. Currently, I'm the co-host of The Morning Show on 95.3, KSEL-Country. I was recently named the 2004 Sportscaster of the Year by the New Mexico Broadcasters Association. My wife is the former Janine Snyder from Carroll, Iowa, and I have two sons. Cam, now 26, was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and received his Master's Degree in 2004 from Eastern New Mexico University. Brian, now 19, was born in San Diego, and graduated from Portales High School in 2005. For some strange reason, he's majoring in History in college!

Waikiki…where I caught the most virulent flu of all times and had to be hospitalized. Thanks for reminding me!

Anything with 15 ounces of sugar in each serving.

6’3”. Just made it, too.

Do you have any tattoos?
Plenty of taboos, but no tattoos.

I’m in the witness protection program. No one will find me here.

Anything that was served to me at gatherings of my Norwegian relatives.

Sly and the Family Stone at Northwestern University in May of 1972, because it resulted in a full blown riot (I was in my revolutionary phase back then).

What’s your favorite band of all time?
I’ve got to go with my boys from my old home town of San Diego, Blink-182.
